The family unit is the core of a sound, strong community. In family therapy, family members meet to discuss the issues creating family discord, learn ways to improve family dynamics and strengthen their relationships.

Many life events—the loss of a family member, unemployment, chronic health problems, marital issues, life stressors, financial problems—not only affect the individual, but also the entire family unit. Family therapy examines how family members communicate, solve problems and express emotions. Roots of conflict emerge

that may hinder the family's ability to copewith life issues and situations. The inevitable disagreements and ultimate communication breakdown can leave all involved feeling hurt and misunderstood.

Under the therapist's guidance, family members can learn new ways to interact and resolve existing issues. Both individual and family goals are set and everyone works at ways to achieve them. New behavior patterns replace the old, and, by doing so, the family emerges more cohesive and stronger.
