In marriage/couples counseling, individuals meet with the therapist together and/or singly to explore areas of disagreement/contention, emphasizing feasible and practical solutions to strengthen or separate.
The therapist will typically help the couple examine their relationship and ways of interacting—roles, expectations, goals and belief systems. More often than not, both individuals are contributing in some way to

By becoming more aware of their behaviors and interactions, couples can learn to change the ways in which they approach one another and behave toward each other. They can improve their communications. They can also discover ways to resolve issues and concerns that are mutually agreeable and beneficial, thus improving the quality and strength of the marriage.
